Plants that come back year after year

Plants that come back year after year

Many people are worried that a garden, even a tiny little garden will take up loads of time. This can be true as the investment of time often is rewarded with lots of kinds of crops. However there are some plants that are permanent and that will produce food or flowers repeatedly. These are called perennials.

  • Raspberries, Blackberries, Gooseberries, Blackcurrants, Red currants, Logan berries, Kiwi fruit, Grapes, cranberries, Goji berries, Blueberries,
  • Pears, apples, patio figs, or plums
  • Chives, Mint, Sage, Thyme, Rosemary, Fennel, Lemon Balm, Oregano,
  • Strawberries and alpine strawberries
  • Rhubarb, Asparagus, Leeks, Onions,
  • Flowers that grow from bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and Irises will come back provided that the bulbs were not eaten by mice or rotten by poor drainage or frost.
  • Wild flowers and flowers that self-seed like Campanula will return year after year
  • This way is the most sustainable kind of gardening.

I have lived in my home for the past 13 years and I can attest that I have never planted Campanula. It comes back year after year on the back steps to the delight of all bees and insects. Below is a photo of my cat Max enjoying the Campanula.
